Professor Frank I Michelman, who is attending a research seminar on Constitutionalism in Africa at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), paid a special visit to the SARCPL on 4 September. Prior to his retirement in 2012 Professor Michelman was the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard Law School. His areas of interest include property law, constitutional law, legal and constitutional theory. Although he recently retired from teaching, he still publishes extensively on various topics, including South African constitutional law, and is a regular speaker at conferences.
During his visit to the SARCPL, he discussed his current research, which focuses on the vested grip the common law has on South African legal thinking and how this influences the logic and reasoning of the judiciary. He also shared valuable insights on some of the research currently being done at the SARCPL.
