Prof André van der Walt (Chair of the SARCPL) attended the fifth annual meeting of the Association for Law, Property and Society (ALPS) Conference on 2-3 May, held at the University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada. He delivered a keynote address entitled The systemic marginality of property.
SARCPL alumni Dr Mikhalien du Bois (Kellerman, Unisa), Dr Wian Erlank (NWU Potchefstroom), Dr Sue-Mari Viljoen (Maass, Unisa) and Mr Richard Shay (Unisa) also presented research papers at the ALPS Conference.
At the 2014 ALPS Conference, Prof Van der Walt and Prof Joseph William Singer (Harvard Law School) were awarded the annual ALPS Excellence Award for 2014. The Excellence Award is made to scholars for their contribution to the development of Property Law. Previous recipients of the Excellence award include Professor Gregory Alexander (Cornell) and Professor Carol Rose (Yale). Professor Van der Walt is the first non-US scholar to receive this award.
